NEW BEGINNERS

If you have never danced before and are thinking about joining a line dance class this page is for you.

Having been dragged along to my first line dance class rather than going along willingly, I know about the preconceptions you may have about line dancing.

I thought it would be all country & western music.

I thought everyone would be wearing checked shirts.

I didn't think it would be good exercise

I really didn't expect to enjoy myself.

I was wrong on all counts.

I did enjoy myself.

You can wear whatever you like.

The music is a mixture of all styles.

It is definitely good exercise.

The benefits of Line Dancing are many and there are probably a few you have never considered:

1. Very good exercise. It is even recommended as such by Doctors.  We discovered one night at a basic beginners class that we had danced the equivalent of 3 miles.

2. It's good for your brain!

All of us agree ( especially those who no longer work ) that it is extremely good for your memory. There are loads of dances, all with different patterns. No-one remembers them all but you will be surprised at just how many you do remember.

3. New Friends.

It is a great way to make new friends. You will never be ignored when you walk in the door. We are always glad to see new people because we want the class to thrive and because the majority of us started on our own and we know how it feels.

4. You Don’t Need A Partner! Not all of us have partners that will dance and thankfully you don’t need one for line dancing.

5. Good Music. That might not seem like a benefit as such, but I personally think it is. I have lost count of the people that have approached me and said how much they like the music.

6. Dancing.

It makes you feel happy, all exercise releases endorphins which improve your mood or ( happy dolphins ) as one of my friends likes to call them. I can’t prove it but I think dancing releases more of them than any other form of exercise. You will learn just about every style of dance there is, from the basic beginners dances which are mostly grapevines and a few turns to intermediate dances which will have you dancing, waltz, cha cha, rumba, salsa, you name it we do it.

If you have now decided you will give it a go here are a few things to make your first class a little easier.

1. Wear the right footwear. There are many dance shoes on the market for dancing. Some with heels, some without, some casual, some smart, but initially you just need a pair of shoes or boots that preferably have a grippy heel, a slippy sole and are comfortable to wear for a few hours.

2. Wear the right clothes. Again you need to be comfortable, nothing too tight. Any form of exercise makes you hot and line dancing is no exception. Jeans and t shirt is my standard form of dress, but basically anything that you are comfortable in.

3. One Step At A Time. It is practically impossible for you to learn and remember every dance you do at your first class. If you come home knowing one dance then you are doing well. As the weeks go by your repertoire will increase and also your knowledge of the steps which makes each new dance you learn easier. Don’t expect too much of yourself, just enjoy what you do and relax, it will all fall into place as the weeks go by.
